I have a picture someone sent me and I want to print it, but can't. It's of an unknown type and I need to convert it to a jpeg. If I go to properties, it does not show an extension. When I have opened it to view, it does not open automatically---I have to select to open it with a photo viewer. I tried a utility that changes any file to jpeg, but that did not work. I don't know what else to try. Any suggestions?

Ask your friend what file type it is. I am guessing your friend in on a MAC which does not require file extensions. Also, you culd open the file in notepad and take a look at the first few lines of code - sometimes there's soething in there that is easily identifyable

Thanks for the suggestion, but the only thing I saw in Notepad was that it's from a Canon and it's not even HTML but mostly just rectangles. She sent me several pics and only a few ended up like that. Maybe she will know what's up with it.

If it's straight from a camera, it's probably RAW, JPEG or TIFF format. Google for a program called XNView. It's a freeware graphics viewer that will open RAW, JPEG & TIFF files and will let you convert to JPEG.
If XNView complains that it doesn't know the file type, try adding the extention of TIF, JPG or RAW.
