Often, when I try to play a compressed video, my windows media player claims it found the needed codec, but no picture is present (and occasionally, no audio is present). When I try to add it to Windows movie editor, I get an error message claiming that I do not have the right codecs. I checked and I know that I have Windows' standard codec package. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Gspot will identify the codecs in the file.
K-Lite has all the codecs

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

You can download the codecs as stated above but i find it installs random crap you don't need. The easiest solution is to download a player that will play anything i recommend VLC Player

Try this free video Player, it could support 3gp, Mp4, H264, Mov, Flv and all other popular video and audio formats (Mp3, Wma, Ogg, Mpeg-1,Mpeg-2, etc.) as well as DVDs, CD Audio and Swf Flash Files.

"Okay. I was able to fix the problem. Thank you all."
Great! How?
Just an FYI, this thread will appear in Google search results for years, so people searching for "codec issues" may stumble upon your thread. How frustrating for them to find that you fixed your problem without explaining how you did it. If you provide a quick explanation you could be helping countless people in the future. Be nice and pay it forward :)
