can't play sound and flash

i get three symbols when i load a webiste with flash red square, green circle and blue triangle. windows media plays from cd's but not from webistes. e.g when i go to my own webiste the flash movie won't play and i get these three symbols in the space where the flash should be. somebosy said download shockwave but i cn't i don't get any prompts, activex ???
Otherwise empty your TIF folder or remove the Macromedia ActiveX component from IE Tools, Manage Add-ons and then you should be prompted on next visit.
