Hi all, I have just bought my first DVD burner, and TV Tuner card. Everything went very well with making my first DVD. But is there any way to make the process go faster?
I am probably going to have to do this 2-3 times per week, and the videos I need to upload are always over an hour and a half.

The upload process takes an hour and a half or more, then after I'm done with that I have to edit the video which takes 10 minutes or less, then I have to burn it to DVD, which in Nero it takes 2 hours! So it takes around 4 hours and 10 minutes to copy the videos to DVD!

I know that I can't help how long it takes to upload it, or edit it, but I was wondering about the burn process. Nero VisionExpress takes less than 2 hours to 'Transcode the movie file'. Is there some way I can make this get done quicker w/o having to update my computer? Thanks for any responses that you may have.

I believe in the Big Bang. God said it, and BANG it happened!

You are using a bunch of terms incorrectly which is making this hard to understand. I have no idea what you are referring to as the "upload process". I'm assuming you mean the process of capturing the video.

As for the 2 hours to burn it, you also went on to describe it (correctly) as transcoding. The process of transcoding is what is using up most of that 2 hours - not the burning. There is nothing much you can do to speed that process up without some type of upgrade, aside from ensuring that all unnecessary background tasks are terminated before starting.

Your most cost efficient option would be to upgrade your RAM to at least 512MB (a GIG would be even better).

I find WinAVI faster than Nero preparing the material for burning, but that's about the only place I've found to be able to save any time.

I wonder what'll happen if I do this ?

Agreed.
When performing tasks with videos my machine has used as much as ~600mb of RAM.

You would be able to save time by not utilizing the pagefile.

Ok, thanks. I just don't see what would be hard to understand about my post.
I thought I was correct in saying the 'upload process' because I'm uploading it from a Hi8 cassette to the computer. Am I not correct? You have to bear with me because this is my first day with this stuff.

But I will take each of your thoughts into consideration. Thanks again!

What takes the extra time when transconducting is the rendering. Rendering is basically the rewriting of frames within the movie.

Rendering periods can be pretty short or long depending on how much different your input file is from your output file.

I record a lot of TV shows and have been able to cut my renders down to about 40minutes. I use studio 9.43, and do all of my bitrate calculations prior to the record. So During edit there are only a few things to do (remove commercials...). My bit rate and such on the output file is the same as the input so things go pretty fast.

It will take a little bit of experience, but as you learn... things will get faster

Wow, thanks alot blackbill, you saved the day. I was about to start another thread asking what transcoding really is. Ok, so what can I do to make the input file more like the output file so that my transcoding times are shorter? It's not that I'm impatient, but I'll have to do this 3-6 times per week, and the only computer I have to do it on is the family computer. Thanks for the help this far.
