The files will play from the harddrive just fine. After the movies have been burnt to the DVD+R disk and played back, the sound is messed up. The sound has a high pitched hissing in the background and it sounds somewhat muffled and slowed down. I'm using Nero-7.0.8.2 / Nero Vison 4 . I burned another fine that I had burned before that worked, and this time it turned out with the sound messed up to. So I'm thinking it has to be codec or a problem with Nero.
Please help.

Try copying one back to the hard drive and see how it plays. That might tell you if the data is being corrupted in the burning process.
You might want to do a compare between the original and the copy on the DVD, if you have a program that will do that.

Can you tell me how to copy one back to the harddrive? How do I compare the original with the copy on the DVD? Do you know of a program that does that and do you have a link?

To copy; Open the drive in My Computer, right click the file, select copy.
Open up a hard drive in My Computer, select a place to put it, Click on Edit in the tool bar and then click on paste.I use TestPath to compare CD-R burns

Strange... When I copy it back to the harddrive it plays exactly like it should. What does this tell us? Have any other ideas?
I also tried playing the dvd+r copy on my other dvd drive and the sound was messed up. It didn't make any difference.

Do store bought DVDs play ok?
What is the extension of these video drives? My initial thought is the DVD drive is not set up to use DMA (Direct Memory Addressing).
Unfortunately, I'm kinda new to WinXP and I don't know where to check. If DMA isn't working, it could be because the motherboard drivers were not installed.
Was this system installed with the normal Dell software (not Microsoft)?

Store bought dvd's did play ok. I believe the drive is set up to use DMA. Check this link out it shows you how to check your DMA. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038
It says in my device manager that transfer mode is set to DMA if available on all of them. But, I can see where you thought thats the problem. Because I had a friend who had his DMA not enabled and when he tried to play a dvd it did the same thing when he tried to play a dvd.
Could it be a codec problem? I did install alot of codecs lately.
oh, the files are .mpg and .avi... thanks for all the help

Had to get some sleep.
Thank's for the tip on where to find the DMA settings, humpzu. I actually had run into them there before, but forgotten (senior minute). In Win98 they are in the drive properties, not the controllers.
A codec would theoretically be a possibility, but working ok from a hard drive and not from a DVD drive seems kinda improbable?
My feeling is that it's not Nero. But you could downlod another burner to try it.
My last guess is a marginal writing problem. When you copy files from an optical drive, a method called CRC (Cyclic Redundency Checking) is used to insure the data is read without errors. If an error occurs, it is retried either until it is read correctly or an error threshold is reached.
When playing audio CDs the data is not checked for errors.I'll do some research and thinking, but I think this problem is too much for me. Maybe someone else will pop up with a possible fix. I would try another DVD writer, if you have a friend who will let you borrow theirs.

Ignore the last post. It ended up in the wrong place.

Thanks for all the help. I'll keep checking this thread to see if you post anything additional.

I'm definitely out of ideas. I would try another drive, if you can borrow one.

Once again thanks for all the help. I finially figured out what the problem was. It was a codec issues. What I did is... I deleted some codecs that I recently installed and it now plays fine.

So you had the correct diagnosys right from the start. Good work humpzu. I would never had thought it was a codec issue. But you live and learn. Thanks very much for posting back. I'll sure remember this one.
