256 color problem

I have a plug and play monitor on standard PCI graphics adapter (VGA).Opening control panel/display/settings, the color dropdown menu only lists 2 and 16 colors. So 256 colors cannot be set. Similarly the resolution setting slide is fixed at 640 X 480 and cannot be changed. It seems that something has gone wrong with the Graphics display driver. Can you please help me find a solution. Details below.

I agree tha tyou need to reinstall the SIS graphics driver.
However, I have experienced not being able to install it via the simple .exe that one can dowonload from SIS. It required the SIS driver CD that contains the installer.
