Well. I've been recording some movies but I haven't been able to upload the movies straight from the camera because I don't have a 1394 port on my computer. Is there some kind of converted that I could buy so I can plug in the 1394 cable into the converter and place it in my USB 2.0?

Are you sure that the camera does not also have a USB (mini) plug to attach with?
When in doubt read the manual.

I do. The side of my camera has mini USB, firewire, S-video and ID-2. I've tried the mini USB before but that only transfers everything saved on my memory.
I've read the manual. Trust me. This thing cost me $850 bucks when it first came out. Sony DCR-TRV17. Nice camera and I've kept it in perfect shape. So, buy a Firewire PCI card?

Buy a firewire card, they are pretty cheap (under $30) and you will be able to control the playback of the camera with the computer.
