Solved Why is my brand new Nikon Cool Pix s5200 not charging

June 24, 2014 at 15:10:07
Specs: Windows 7
It charged 2 times fully!! No Problems...

The camera and battery are brand new, used less than 2 weeks, a gift!!

When I plug it in to charge the green light blinks about 7 to 15 times then stops, I can unplug it and it does the same!!

Have very special event coming up and so disappointed!! Being a gift from out of State, I have no receipt or even know where it was bought!!

Any help would be so much appreciated!!

Thank you!!

First off, have you tried using a different charger or outlet?

Make sure you are using the charger that came with the camera, or at least one that is rated the same (DC 5V, 550 mA - from the user manual)

Was the camera completely dead when you tried to charge it?

The manual says that it should take approximately 3 hours to fully charge the battery. Sometimes, when the battery is completely dead, the device will require you to completely charge the battery, and will not turn on if it is partially charged.

Have you tried taking the battery out, trying to turn it on, then putting the battery back in? It sounds kinda silly, but it discharges all of the electricity from the system, and can help to sort of 'reset' it.

If the camera can still be turned on, but just cannot be charged, make sure the setting 'Charge by Computer' is turned off.

According to the manual, quick flashing of the green light means either the charger is not properly connected, or the battery has failed.

Do the above steps first, but if they don't work, you may just have a faulty battery. In which case I suggest you contact the manufacturer and get a new battery.

Thank you but I have tried all that.....My son has one that uses the same battery, my battery charges in his camera, his will not charge in mine....I t seem to be in the plug where you put the cord to charge it.....We researched it on the computer and it seems to be a flaw in that camera....some of them anyway!!

I used only the Nikon supplied with the camera battery and the cord to try to charge it, it will not come on at all, but with my son's battery he charged in his camera, it came on...but he lives 150 away so that is not an option....He came by today and had his camera so we did some playing with them!

I am sick about it, It is brand new!!! I have not harmed it on anyway.....the only thing I can think of is to order a charger for the battery, (external charger) which is something that I cannot afford due to being off work and it is sad I have to pay when this is defective!

I also did not want my Precious friends who are sacrificing for me to know it was bad....they are so excited to have gotten it and all the accessories for me and to be taking me on a trip!

Maybe the Nikon people will have a fix for it since it has been an issue for others!

Thank you so much for your response!! I wish it would have fixed it!! You are very kind and knowledgeable!!

Definitely seems like it's just an internal hardware issue with the camera. Your best option at this point would probably be to contact Nikon and have them give you a replacement. It should be under warranty, considering it is brand new. It may take a while for them to send you a new one, I personally haven't used many Nikon products, some companies are very quick about replacements and others...not so much, so I don't know if it will arrive in time for your trip or not.

Sorry I couldn't have been of more help, but best of luck anyway.

Thank you so much for your help!! I will just go on Ebay and order an external charger for it for now anyway.....then send it back to them when I get back from the trip!!

I don't know much about this kind of thing, as you can tell, :) but I don't think I will cause it any harm by using it with the external charger.....I checked last night and can get one for about 7 or 8 dollars, even cheaper but want one that will charge quickly!!

I am usually a Kodak Gal to be honest! I have always used Kodak, but this little camera takes awesome pics and it was a gift so I am pleased, if I can get this corrected!

Thank you again for taking time to help and for your advise!!

BTW......I went on Nikon site already and reported this problem, that was 2 days ago, no reply so you have been much more help!! :)
