video file crashes pc

HOPE SOMEBODY CAN ASSIST... i have a dell which crashes when i play any video in any format AVI/DIVX/MPEG4/DVD i use vlc and also cyberlink dvd player i get alot of my movies off the net and as soon as i open the folder with the media in my windows screen shows an erros message and then crashes my windows screen thus stopping any work that i ma doing at the time this never used to happen i have checked for any kind of virus and nothing can be found, i also have windows media center which no longer works with my sky box saying i do not have the correct drivers installed. I got all this when i brought the pc so i do not have any discs to reinstall. i ahve looked at the reg and there seem to be a few video drivers installed but i do not know which one is supposed to start up. could these problems be linked ?
and could somebody please advise me as to which video driver i should have running on boot up?
