I don't know whether it's suitable to ask it here, but that's what i want to do with the video:

Basically I've got a series of photos and a background. Is there a software that allow me to use the same background throughout the video with the series of photos in left hand corner, using fade in/ fade out as transition between photos?

Well why don't you try Vegas Video editor. I think that's really good program for a bigginers
