Runing Win-Vista. Files having the file exten

Specs: Windows Vista, Pentium T2080/2GB
No files having the "lnk" extension will open, therefore, no shortcuts work. After encountering the problem, I did quite a bit of searching the Internet. From what I learned there, I've concluded that the problem is an error in the registry. I really don't want to buy a program which may or may not fix the problem. If I were SURE a particular program WOULD fix the problem, I'd buy it. It would be well worth it, but the terminology on the web sites about the various commercially available programs does not give me any confidence that they will.
I have to admit that I haven't backed-up that computer for a few weeks, so I DON'T want to reformat the hard drive until I have this problem fixed.
(I can't find a "Catagory" that sounds appropriate.)

The fix on this page is free and it works - you can check what's being changed beforehand by opening the reg file in notepad first of all, if you want to.
