I have a canon mini DV player about 4 years old...I need to take the tapes i created and put them on comp. and then make DVD's....what kind of software do i need.

You will need a computer that has a working Operating system, a processor and some RAM to start with.
You will also need to know what type of outputs the camera has and then a matching inout port on that PC.

Then you will some software to convert that video if it's output is analog to digital and then some software to capture the video.

Of course some software to burn the DVD if this PC has a DVD burner.

I have a brand new Comp. 3 gig chip,1 gig ram,good video card,dvd burner.I guess i have to buy the software ?

Yes, and a video capture card or firewire card if your camera has a firewire output on it.
