Making Hard Drive show up as a USB

I have a cable that allows me to hook up hard drives via USB cable to my computer. When i plug it in it shows up as a hard drive. I have a DVD player which has a USB port on it and works perfectly fine with my flashdrive. I would like to use the hard drive to store large quantities of movies so they can be watched any time simply by choosing the USB/DVD button. Is there some software or a specific driver that i can install on the hard drive to force it to come up as a flashdrive on my computer? (I assume that is what the problem is.)
