IPOD Cannot be formatted

Hi this is sarath., i bought an ipod from sony, one year before.
Now, when it is attached to the pc then i cant open it and system tells format now when i format it , system replies that it cannot be formatted.
What is the reason for that and how can i format it.

No you didn't, Sony doesn't make iPods, Apple does. Tell us what you really have.
