I have home movies already on DVD. I used nero to put them on my hard drive in an mpeg format. I have two questions: First, Is there any quality loss when this is done? Second, if I change them to DV-AVI and then back to mpeg will there be quality loss.

When you convert to a compressed format there is a loss.

COnverting them to mpeg is the way to go if your intent is to put them on a DVD - even movies on commercial DVDs are compressed into mpeg format. But any compression you do from there will result in even more quality loss.
