Disppearing Itunes/IPhone

My music keeps disappearing out of Itunes - although it remains of my hard drive. The help page on Apple Itunes states to drag it over - this I did - but it disappeared again about a couple of hours later before the pc was switched off. I am thinking about buying an Iphone but it will the apps for the music which is one of the reasons I am buying it will be useless if Itunes cannot hold the music. Should I give up on Itunes (and Iphone) - or is there something I can do to fix the problem. I am not a techy so will need to be easy to understand. Thanks Gill
