Right click My Computer, hit Properties.
Click the Hardware tab.
Click Device Manager.
This will bring up a list of installed hardware. There are
generally a lot of cryptic looking things there, particularly
under "System." Ignore most of it.
Look through all the categories, expanding each if you have
to, and try to find something with a little yellow or red
exclamation point or "X" over the icon.
If you see one that does, write down its name, then double
click on it.
Then tell us exactly what it says under "Device Status."
If you can't find any with that icon, look in the system tray
next to the clock for a little icon that says "Safely remove
hardware" when you hover your cursor over it. You should
definitely see this icon with your flash drive plugged in. If you
don't see it, then I would say that the hardware is defective.
It would also be helpful to tell us exactly the model # of the
unit or to give us a link to where the same unit can be
