Certain games wont start with digital display

When using a DVI to HDMI cable to connect my PC to my HDTV I can open and play games such as Crysis and Spore perfectly. When I try to open games that are ports like Need for Speed Shift and the new Wolfenstien, I get a Windows error message and the game doesnt start at all. The latter two games work fine when I use a VGA cable to my HDTV, and Ive even tried switching to VGA, changing the game display settings to the defaults and switching back to a digital cord, but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
