at first, my cd drive wouldn't open. then i used a paper clip in the hole on the side of the button, but now it's not recognizing that there is a disc. before this happened, my laptop wouldn't start up. i have AVG virus scan, but could a virus have slipped by?

Do you get any light on the drive? Try reseating the power connector, or if you have a spare power connector, try it. Try rebooting. if neither helps, the drive might have died. It's not likely to be a virus.

If you are having a battery problem, that 'could' be the cause of the drive not working. If you are going to replace the battery, I would do that before replacing the drive.
The drive also 'might' just need reseating. I'm not very experienced with laptops, maybe someone else will come in and offer better advice.
