Comment:
I am trying to connect to a SQL database on windows 2000 advance server and it returns the following error when I want to connect SQL Server through the System DSN in Control Panel - Administrative tools - ODBC:
Connection failed: SQLState: '01000' SQL Server Error: 1231 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()) Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 17 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]Specified SQL server not found.
I am using win 2000 server and when i want to configure the dsn in the list box the the choice of sql server is not available. It doesn't matter which way I connect through the authentication of Windows login or authentication to the SQL Server using login and password with ID's we have in the SQL Server. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I had similar problems on a Windows 2000 box w/ SQL2000. As it turned out, the machine would never connect when using the hostname, it would only work when using the IP address.
Just a suggestion, I pulled my hair out trying to figure it out & I've only ever seen it on that one box.
Even 'localhost' wouldn't connect to the local SQL---whatever, windows sucks.
