Specs: windows xp
I am installing Oracle 8i server on a Win XP machine for my client who have license for this old var. After successful installation and testing of data through SQL* Plus whenever I restart the PC I couldn't be able to make the connection again and it showing oracle error ORA-12514: TNS: listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given in connect descriptor. It couldn't even accept or can be connected through the default system/manager account. From control panel-services listener is showing 'started' while service for the database is showing 'starting'. Both services are marked as automatic. Can we install oracle 8i server on Win XP ? We can install oracle 8i client on Win XP as we have installed this on many XP machines. Please suggest.

Try putting ORACLE_SID and ORACLE_HOME variables in system variables. ORACLE_SID is your sid name and ORACLE_HOME is the base directory where oracle binaries are installed.
