ODBC driver error on AS400 from VB

I have a dsn to AS400 I am writing a VB 6.0 program my select statement is "select ninaml,pmtmpm from cinmad join cipomf where cinmad.niplnr = cipomf.pmplnr" and i receive this error: ODBC driver does not support the requested properties. but if i remove the field 'pmtmpm' and its associated table 'cipomf' so that it is just a one field, one table query, "select ninaml from cinmad" i do not get the ODBC error!!! what is causing this error? when i run this query from the AS400, i get results with no errors.
