Hi all,

I'm new to all of this, so be patient. I'll explain as much as I can.

I bought a program that is a front-end to a SQL Express database. Everything works fine accessing the database from the server machine (at home).

I want to be able to connect into the database from work. The program comes with a database connection "wizard" that asks you for the server, the database name and your login (sql or win authentication).

I'm at work now, and I thought it would be as simple as putting in [MyHomeIP]\[MyServer]\[MyDatabase] into the server box and it would work. It didn't. I tried just the IP address and the DB name. Nada. I tried the Domain Controller name, plus the other stuff.. Nada.

It is HIGHLY likely that I didn't configure the SQL server to "accept" my login from work. I set the "allow remote connections" thing to yes and made sure Named Pipes was enabled, but I get no joy here at work.

Is there something else, on the server, that needs doing? Opening a port, perhaps? Which port? I think it is 1434, from something I glanced at earlier, but I'm not sure. I did a port scan on the server from work and it only showed ftp, mail and one other port open. BTW, I set my root FTP to the SQL folder that has my database, and restricted access to only my IP here at work. I can map the drive without problems - just can't get into the database.

Thanks in advance. Love you guys and gals.

-Andy
