Access 97 database with 2003 Server

Hello everyone, I'm having a problem here. We have a program which is using Access 97 database. Previously, the users are all Win98 machines and NT server. There are no problems. However, recently, some of the users have changed their OS to XP and the server has been changed to Win 2003 Server and this error message appears very often. "Couldn't update; currently locked by user ABC on machine DEF". No changes have been made to the database or the program. What could be the problem? Please advice. Thanks.

It was a VB5 program connecting using DAO..
