access 2000 , form problem

On my Form there are couple of combo boxes and based on the values entered into them, matching records will be showed upon the match. " It should give me the matching records based on the value entered n if the value isn't entered then it should take the default value ( * in this case) and display the matching records " but it only takes the " deault value" even though i enter a value .....can anyone please help me .
