Hi

Installed this last night with some strange events on start up it only game me the choice of manual/1200/1600 cpu speeds. I thought it would run at 1600 how wrong was I it kept crashing. slowed to 1200 all is fine. What am i doing wrong? I think manual would be best but i dont know what settings to make, in cpu/pci frequency or cpu frequency multiple can anyone help?

thanks

This is a new board and I have zero experience with it.

I downloaded the manual.

I’m curious. Is the board setup “jumperfree” on page 19 and how are the CMOS settings from page 63 set?

Yep jumper free

Current setting is cpu 1200, which auto sets the next two. I want to manually set this to the correct setting

Your CPU multiplier is locked at 12.0. If you can only run at 1200MHz, you FSB must be set at 100MHz. Can you set it at 133MHz? I believe this is shown on page 20. If so, your CPU will run at 1600MHz which is the “normal” CPU frequency for an Athlon XP 1900.

PS

I’m assuming that you haven’t unlocked your CPU multiplier.

No i have not unlocked the processor, I will try looking at that tonight. Why would the PC lock when I chose the 1600 choice on startup?

I’m just guessing but the jumper on the board could be set for an FSB of 100MHz and selecting 1600MHz for the CPU frequency in CMOS may try to force the FSB to 133MHz with the locked multiplier.

You say that you got it set for “JumperFREE” so the board jumper shouldn’t matteer but maybe it does.

You can set the FSB by jumper and in CMOS on my MOBO. If the two aren’t set the same, my computer won’t even boot!

Well, concerning your question why it is on 100MHz from the manufacturer?

They always do that. I have an MSI board and an AMD Athlon XP 1700 and had the same prob at the beginning. In my case it was a bios "mistake". The bios says, in its safest (manufacturer version) form that FSB is at 100MHz. So I needed to put it up to 133 too. Otherwise I would get shown an AMD Athlon 1100 at startup. If you can't change that ion your bios (cause I know ASUS is handling things different) you must be able to do that whith your jumpers. Then your cpu runs at full speed. Good luck and have fun with it! :)

Well I have tried all sorts. Here is my latest attempts. Remove battery and short clr rtc pins then set to jumper setting and selected 133 mhz by dips.
reboot machine will not run.

Removed battery then short pins and reset to jumperless. reboot auto selects bios and asks for cpu settings i have manual/1200/1600 i try 1600 gets to me splash screen then freezes or just black screen. reset board again select 1200 cpu speed all OK. So my spanking 1900+ is running at 1211mhz Am I upset I think so. It make no sense.

Thanks.. I have contacted both AMD and Asus, blimey talk about its not me. I have however had one tip which i will look at.

To look at the heatsink which in this case is a Global Win twin fanned job. They say that more thermal grease may be needed and the CPU may be clocking out because of the lack of cooling. Mmmmmm I will see. I will come back and let you know the outcome... Thanks

The cooler comes with a thermal pad which by choice AMD prefer you use. I have changed for themal paste and guess what it works. Sadly the thermal cut off stopped me seeing the CPU temps.

I am now running and have found out a important thing paste is better than themal pads.

Funny that AMD dont like paste but there you go...

The processor now clocks at 1600mhz which i am told is correct however when i use the asus proble it tell me that it could go to 1800Mhz any views?

Hey Kevin or anyone that answers. I am having the same problem with my xp1900 and a7v333 board. You said you are using thermal paste now instead of the pad. I am using the amd retail hsfan which has the pad. did you just use the paste on top of the pad or did you try to take of the pad.

I got a7v333, xp1900 too with Coolermaster dp5-7h53f and its idle around 50-55 C°

only my mobo temp will get to 38 C° which is too hot.

Hi,

I've bought an ASUS A7V333, 512Mb Nanya PC2100, a XP1900+ and I'm using the boxed AMD thermal cooler, with the default thermal pad. It seems for me that everything is OK, the CPU could run at 1600 MHz and I´m running it know at 1717MHz, with the External clock set at 143MHz (system BIOS version 1006). The system is very stable, though.
Temperatures are OK, too, with CPU averaging at 62ºC and MB at 30ºC.
Maybe if you are having trouble you should check the JEN jumper, which should be set to 2-3 for the JumperFree mode to work, as well as the DIP switches, which should be all on the OFF position (manual, page 19). The CPU core VID jumpers should be also set to the 1-2 position, so that the Vcore is set to default (page 22).
After that, ajust the settings on the BIOS Advanced Menu. It worked fine for me...

Well, hope it does help someway...

Guys i just saw a review in a German site and they state that the ASUS A7V333 doesn't recognise the correct temperature of the CPU..They say that the true temperature is 8-10 degrees LESS than what the BIOS says..So, if for example you have 61 degress, you trully have around 51-53 degrees Celcius!!!

I myself have an AthlonXP 1800+ on an ASUS A7V333 and also a Volcano 7 with Artic Silver 2 and 6 case fans!!! ASUS Probe (the utility that ASUS has) reports 58 degrees MAXIMUM temperature at Full load, so i trully have around 50 degrees, which is really good for an overclocked CPU (I have it overclocked to 1700Mhz, 11.5x148)!

MB doesn't post past 13X at normal FSB setting. Highest clock multiplier seems to be stuck at 12.5 (xp 2000+). Could it be my unlocking job? if something was wrong with unlocking would it not accept 12.5X in the first place?

Any ideas? thanks all...

The A7V333 Motherboard is not completely compadable with the 1900+ series of xp cpu.

Currently i am using this combination and found that no matter what i do the the bois will say that the computer hanged on the precious attempt to boot up and will prompt me to change my settings .... again..
These are the steps i have tried:
1)setting the speed to 1200 mhz... ended with the same error msg
2)setting the speed to 1600 mhz... currently the bios does not reject this setting
3)setting the multiple to 10x and frequency the 160.... same thing happened i also did i lot of combinations but none of them worked
4)setting the dip switches to 133 mhz whih also ended in utter disapointment =( to use the dip switches you need to set the jumpers on your pins from 1,2 to 2,3

P.s. never ever d/l the newest bios out for A7V333 rite now.. the bios will make your mother board crash, or fry up.... the only solution is to change your mother board, change your cpu, or wait for asus to get a update a new bios which will fix the problem, i doubt that even if asus makes the new bios... there will still be some minor problems with the compadability.

p.s.s. also my internet(cable) doesn't work, my modem's pc light isn't on but when i disconnect the power cable on the modem the computer tells me that the modem has been disconnected... i need help on this... i don't know if this is a problem with the motherboard.... we are the ginuea pigs for the asus a7v333 botherboard...

Hi all,

I see I'm not alone with a CPU problem on the A7V333, I have a Athlon 1900+ didn't have any trouble with it...until i upgraded my bios from 1.05 to 1.07 after the update my bios started up saying that my cpu has changed and that it couldn't run at 1600mhz, but i could choose between 1250 or 1667 mhz. When starting up from a cold cpu the bios won't allow it with a 1667 Mhz (12.5 x 133/33) but gives me to choose between the normal setting for 1200 mhz (12 x 133/33). When selecting a configuration that the bios is suggesting it will ofcourse reboot and return to the bios where I can select to boot on 1250/1667 mhz.

I tried to reload the original bios 1.05 back on but it won't help. I also tried to set it Manual to 12 x 133/33 and a few other settings too, but i only get a black screen and need to reboot....

Anyone with a genuis idea to get my system back to what it should be...a +1900 and not +2000.

by the way, I'm running jumber-free mode.

Thanks!!!

Hello, I think I am quite frightened to read all the messages about AthlonXp and A7V333 combination. I currently built XP1800 1.53GHz and A7V333. The first boot up took me straight to bios to set my cpu speed, which was quite surprising because jen jumper is set to jumper free and all the dip switches are set to off position.
Anyway I set it to 1533 and after a few boot ups it took me again to bios to reset the cpu speed.

Now I am quite a newbie in this field, but I can see that I have done nothing wrong here. I installed Win2k, the installation process was fine, but as I entered the system, it would either freez after an install, or just wouldn't let me shut down the system.

Could anyone please tell me how to set the cpu speed through bios?

Also there are no slots for RAID etc on my motherboard, but on the manual it shows two extra slots.

I can't locate the JEN jumper as well, as it is surrounded by two or three jumpers, on the manual they have just pointed to the cluster of those jumpers saying this is the jen jumper.

I would be very thankful if someone please help me set it.

Thanks

I tried to build 5 systems based on Asus A7V333, 2 work fine. The other 3 have this bizarre problem in which upon power up, past POST and before the OS loads, I get three beeps and the system freezes. Hit the power button and it emits one beep and un-freezes. Repeat. When the OS begins to load it completely goes away. Big problem however is that while installing an OS such as formatting the HD from the DOS command prompt: a:>format c: you have to press the power button 30+ times during format in order for it to work. Loading RedHat 7.3 doesn't work at all as it finally freezes completely. This has occurred on 3 of the 5 boards. I'm using an Athlon XP 1800+ with PC2100 RAM and either Geforce2 MX 400 or Radeon 7500. I've swapped out RAM, power supply and video cards. I've tried changing this and that BIOS setting. NOTHING! I've e-mailed Asus 1+ week ago with no reply. Help!

When you set "JumperFree" make sure the DIP switches on the MB are _all_ set to OFF!

My board came with two switches set ON, and this caused me all sorts of bizarre problems. The fact that all DIP switches have to be OFF in JumperFree mode is documented in the manual, but not clearly.

I've been running just fine with a 1900+, 1007 BIOS and 512M PC2700 for a week now since fixing that.

I had the same problem as everyone above, but (thank god for the little speaker thing on the motherboard) my memory test kept failing. I changed the banks (256 DDR) and it worked again...for about 10 mins. on the 3rd (last) bank the speaker told me "system falure due to overclocking". I was running at 1600 with stock thermal tape and fan. I figured that the chip was heating up and locking the OS. Now im running at 1200, and I'll go get a better fan and thermal paste. I was kinda shoked that there was no thermal paste in the AMD box. I had no idea that my CPU was overheating like that. If AMD is going to "overclock" stock chips and generate that much heat, they should sell better fans and thermal paste with them!

I live in Honduras which is quite hot as it is and I got an Athlon XP 2100+ A7V333 MB with 512 PC2700 Kingston Value Ram, with a Geforce3 Ti500 and Audigy Platinum.

I've been looking all over the place for the reason why my AMD XP 2100+ A7v333 combo kept heating up (70C). I started using the factory heatsink with the pad. Ran quite smoothly for about a few mins when i checked the monitor i get a high temp reading from the Asus probe. Since I knew this was probably quite a standard pad, I changed the pad for thermal paste, this took off about 5C, running at 65C. Finally i realized that the problem wasnt that much with my processor heatsink combo, it was the fact that the Geforce3Ti500 heats the air quite a bit, I only have 2 fans on my case. Once closed, the hot air from the video card, heats up the air and I'm left with hot air flowing thru the heatsink. The other fact i found out was that ASUS sets this MB to 135MHX instead of 133 which does in turn run the processor be overclocked, causing more heat than would be necessary.

To sort of solve my problem, I have to run the pc with the case open, letting cool air flow into the CPU. Doing this it runs at around 60C normal workload. This of course is no solution, but what it tells me is that the air flow thru my case is inappropriate. I have to either change the case or try with a better heastink like a ThermalTake or similar with Artic Silver 2-3.

The JP1 and JP2 control the voltage for the memory, I'd suggest leaving this to the default factory setting, unless you're haveing problems like abnormal lock ups and such even though temps are not high enough to be the cause, like a couple of you guys mentioned. Another thing you could perhaps look into is the CAS timing for your RAM, try running it at CAS 3 instead of 2, I understand that only samsung and Corsair run well at CAS 2.

I hope this helps some1. I've been quite frustrated woth all this but at least I've found out where my problem seems to reside.
