Hello,

i am getting an ASUS A7V8X mobo very soon, couple of days probs. I want to overclock my AMD XP 1800 (older larger core i think) by using the FSB. I want to get it to approx 150mhz fsb or more if possible. But i am confused and scared of what voltage to increase it to (newbie to o/c'ing). My current core is 1.76V. If anyone could like give me a conversion method to find the best or anyone who has the same type say what FSB they can get it too that would be great. Thank You

tim

ok, i will do the voltage increment. i have a good heatsink at the moment, one of those coolermaster copper base 80mm adjustable fan rpm jobbies. I am not sure of unlocking me CPU, approx how much gain can i get out of it?

I have the 1800 Thuroughbred A at 1.81G (145 x 12.5, 1.6 VCore), I also had it at 1.8G (150 x 12, 1.6 VCore). Give you an idea of what you can do. You won't be able to use the same VCore as the Palimno core requires more voltage. To identify exactly what core you have go to www.ocinside.com, it will allow you to enter the OPN off the CPU(you will need to take the HSF off to see it) and will tell you the core. Or even easier is to download WCPUID (find using google) it will give you the same info easier.

Sorry I sent the reply from work, and was not sure if it was WCPUID or CPUID that identified the core, so try CPUID. However I am pretty sure that model 6 is the Palimino core, as I believe mine says Model 8 (I am at work, and cannot check, but will tonight)

As far as what you can get to will be determined by your ram, and what you have for video card, and other PCI cards. If you do not want to play with the multiplier just put the FSB up one unit and boot. Keep putting it up, until it becomes unstable. When it does up your vcore one increment. If it becomes stable, up the FSB a bit more, if not up the vcore again until stable. Once you get it to its most stable point back off a bit and keep it there. Keep a close eye on you heat, I do not loike to be over 50C on full load, but it is possible to go to 60C. If you are just looking to set it to the max without doing the trial and error search the web with google using words like overclocking, cpu, (your core name) you might find something. But if you do this be careful, they have different components than you and you may not get the same results. you may not be able reach the point they did, or you might be able to higher.

Out of curiousity I downloaded WCPUID and it told me mine was model 6 aswell, and I'm sure mine cant be a paliminio core as I would have had to manually adjust the jumpers on my motherboard for it to work. It must be an athlon/duron family member according to my motherboard manual.

Beg your pardon, I just looked and I muddled up the jumper settings. They aren't exactly clear in these manuals :)

I'v got a palomino.

I have checked at home, and model 8 is definately a Thuroughbred A, so yours is a Palimino. Another program to use is CPUIDmax2. Hope all this helps.

Thank you all for your help,

fingers crossed i won;t fry the thing :D

thnx Dragoon for your help. Hopefully i can get it to 166mhz FSB so it gets up to speed with my RAM but as long as i can push more out of it, i'm happy :D
