I have an XP1700 running on a A7V333 mobo. When I assembled from new I found that my BIOS was telling me that my CPU was running at 47 Deg. at startup, in BIOS, and I went up as high as 67 Deg. in game play (Asus Probe).
I have bought a ThermalTake Volcano 7 and put it on and now my CPU sits at about 48 Deg. idle and goes to about 59-61 in game play.

Is this to hot?

not really, that's the normal temperature for amd.
mine even runs hotter, about 70. and its still stable. amd's cpu are hotter than intel's cpu.
don't worry too much.

I have no idea why people think that 70c is not too hot for a cpu.

I use a Volcano 7 on my XP1800+ and I never see temps go above 50c when i'm video editing for a few hours. Mine idles at 43c and I see no reason why your 1700 and volcano 7 can't run closer to proper temps, unless you're using the thermal pad that comes on the volcano 7. I use Artic Silver 2 paste

70 degrees is a (something is wrong) temp. 59-61 is not bad. If you can add a fan fine. If not, you should be ok. See if you can try to keep it in the low 50 or upper 40's. Every case and situation is different. Everybody wont be able to get a 43 degree c temp. Cases are different and depending on how hot your house gets can effect you cpu temp. I also recommend adding a side fan near the cpu. My temp dropped 11 degree c when i did this.

AMDs can be operational up to 90 celsius, 70 definitly is not too hot, just because some overclockers brag about lower tempatures doesn't mean lower temps are a requirement.

well...fine...all i can say if you dont mind your cpu idle at 70 then to his own. will a cpu that idles at 70 vs a cpu that idles at 50 last as long......NO....But will it work?....Make your choice.

i've seen some Duron fry at 75c and damage the board when they died.

The guy I work with every day has a computer building busness and he has made over 150 socket A based Athlons and Durons and he never saw a full load temp of over 50.

Anyone who says high temps are fine must have alot of money to be replacing cpus all the time

Sounds like somebody screwed with his voltages or didnt apply any thermal compound/incorrectly installed his heatsink. Because thats way out of line especially if your running at stock speeds. My 1600+ runs at 1.9 volts with 180mhz fsb and 1890mhz cpu clock and it doesnt ever break 47C under full load and idles at 42C
