ok, my friend has a computer with a k6 processor of some sort, a 333mhz i think, and they have 96mb of ram.

first question is, how fast would this run? would it be useable?

second question: if i bumped it up to 128, would the difference be noticeable?

thanks,
Dave

I wouldn't bother with XP on that machine...even at 128mb of RAM it'll lag. Go with Win98SE, IE6, & install all the updates...

The question should have been would any XP work on this computer? The answer is no. K6 processors used an old pentium type socket 7. The Athlon Xp's use Socket A.

i have a friend who posted a while back asking about this, his name was tofucheese

he found out that xp pro didnt run smoothly at all on his computer 400mhz 128mb ram
even when he upped the ram it still didnt run right
so i think he's back to win98 now, but im not sure he mightve just given up and left it alone

what is painfully obvious to one person might be just painful to the other

I have an old IBM 300 PL that has 256 meg of RAM that I use as a testbed. (Bios dated 12/7/98). It has a 6 gig HD partitioned into a 4 gig FAT 32 and the remaining 2+ gig with Debian Linux on it (dual boot). I originally installed Win98se as the MS O/S then as an experiment used a Win XP Pro upgrade disc on the Win98se partition. This machine certainly liked it and it is currently sitting beside me humming along cheerfully running XP Pro. I feel it runs much better than the former Win98se. Admittedly it is a genuine IBM and I needed to do nothing regarding drivers and settings. My only hassle now is that there is insufficient room left on the HD to do the SP2 upgrade.(I tried) So if you don't mind losing about 2+ gig of HD for your O/S go for it. I do agree after all this that Win98se is probably a better choice.
