Reply: (edit)Dennis, as long as you spread your thermal paste on reletively even that shouldn't be the problem, unless you used your bare finger and it was covered in oil :) Also the pressure of the HSF clamping down on the cpu will further help to spread the thermal paste. Poor application of it will cost you a few degree's, but certainly not 10-15. You can however check to make sure that the HSF is seated correctly. Is this the same Coolermaster you were using on your Duron? It might just be very underrated for your cpu. In any event, try reseating the HSF and set your case up for better airflow. Mount 2 80mm intake fans at the front of your case if it allows (you can buy sleeve bearing fans if you're worried about the noise) and have at least an exhaust at the back. Get those big wind-breaking IDE cables out of the way... I had a similar problem to you when I got my XP 1800, I ultimatly had to get a new HSF in addition to loading up my case with fans. It's actually still pretty quiet and now on the hottest of days it idles low 50's and on cool days or when the AC is on it idles 40's. You can pick up a decent HSF for $25 or so these days, just make sure the fan isn't 7000RPM or you'll want a lot of ear plugs to go with it :) Good luck...

Reply: (edit)I find that the Thermaltake Volcano 7+ is very good and has three speeds but is quite loud when set on high speed (sounds like a 747 jet airplane) and I'd use a good thermal paste like Arctic Silver III, evenly applied (not too thick) by using something like an old credit card.
