Radeon 8500 will give you the best for the money. It's half the price of a Ti4200 and support directx 8.1 . Personnaly i have a 8500 since 2 years and it run perfectly all the games i throw at it. But it's sure that a Ti4200 will be the best if you can afford one. For the FX line, i stay away from it.

The new generation of cards are all better at eye-candy (aa/af) than old cards like a 8500. But for pure framerate power the mx440 then the 8500 then the ti4200 are the best bang for your buck as price goes up. I agree with weezer.

The 8500 was the hot card in it's day (which wasn't that long ago). ATI kinda played games with the naming (or numbering) after that though & it got a little confusing. The 9000 & the newer 9200, which you would think would be better based on their number/names, are actually slower than the 8500 in most bench tests.

I have an MX440 & for the price (about $40), you can't beat it. Tom's Hardware did some breakdowns of graphics cards not long ago...you might wanna take the time to check these out.

What's nice about the 1st chart is that the cards were tested in 2 different systems & plotted on the same graph...one system used a 1.0Ghz Athlon, KT133A mobo, PC133...the other a XP2700+, nForce2 mobo, DDR.

The 2nd chart shows more up to date cards that were tested on the same XP2700+ system.
