A few months ago my family purchased both a 1.7Ghz and 2.4Ghz systems. because for 7 years we have put of with the shut and abuse of an old cyrex 686. As the 1.7Ghz System as well as the 2.4Ghz system are both running windows XP and are both Windows Xp Processors i am finding the 2.4 Ghz system to be extreamly under powered. this occures espically when booting windows as well as when playing games that require a high power CPU (I.E battlefield 1942). although the computer is still operational i am finding that the Cyrex 686 boots and performs some functions a consiturable amount quicker than the 2.4 Ghz. I have attempted to bring this to the attendtion of the company i purchased the systerm from and they replyed "it is a different type of processor" which i know is a pile of BS. this processor is recent enough to be equipt with multi-threading technology just as my 1.7ghz. I know that it is not a question of Ram size because up until a few weeks after purchase the machine ran at an incredible rate.

download this program just to make sure you are not low on memory.

the bf1942 could be a lack of video card power

you may have too many background programs running. This would also slow the boot up.

"As the 1.7Ghz System as well as the 2.4Ghz system are both running windows XP and are both Windows Xp Processors"

Windows XP Processors?

"this processor is recent enough to be equipt with multi-threading technology just as my 1.7ghz. "

1.7 ghz processor does NOT have HT...
if your 2.4 was made after november 2002,A FSB of 533 and it has a "B" after the 2.4, then it has Hyper-Threading

correct me if i'm wrong anyone

2.4C (D1 stepping) with 800 Mhz FSB has HT function, not the 533 nor 400 FSB.

Check if your 2.4 GHz machine actually does run at 2.4 GHz is the Bios. Also check in the BIOS if all processor cache is enabled and APG at 4x / 8x and memory speed.
For widows booting, remove everything from the startup menu, disabled dhcp (fix ip-addres).
And check cpu/mem usage with the task-manager

i stand corrected on the 2.4, i was off by 1 letter, so it's the 2.4c that has HT, but i found this also on intel's site...

ftp://download.intel.com/design/Pentium4/specupdt/24919938.pdf

go to page 12 (under the "notes" column, "11" is the key for the chips that support HT), that's where it starts with the 533 mhz fsb's and it doesn't list the 2.4 as being HT, either in c or d stepping

Not all processors are the same. But first off...windows...xp...processors? I mean, one could be an athlon running at 1.7ghz which would probably be better than something like a celeron at 2.4 (do they even make that?) Anyways, another could be the graphics card. Games like BF 1942 need a good card. You equip an Athlon tbird with a radeon 9800 and it could smack down a new computer with 128mb ram with onboard video. Well...maybe.

It could be the hard drive speed or anything really some dumb program runnin in the backround, I would say format the slow one and see if it speeds up if not buy a new hard drive like a 7200rpm with a 8 meg cache on it, or goto windows 2000(which is xp without all the crap to slow it down)
