I have a old computer with a p4 2.4 currently in it that i use as a lan server and a friend of mine has a dell that he spilled some coffee on and killed the mobo but everything else works perfectly and he would give me the parts in exchange for help with building his new computer... but anyways... should i stick with the p4 2.4 or go to the Intel celeron D 2.8GHz?

If the old P4 2.4 has 800Mhz FSB, then I would stick with it. If it has 400Mhz fsb, then your P4 should perform similar to the 2.8Ghz Celeron D.
