Why is our laptop running so slow?

May 4, 2011 at 23:16:19
Specs: Windows XP
We installed Malwarebytes & AVG Antivirus on our 2004 Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop and uninstalled our internet provider's online security system, thereby freeing up quite a bit of space. We also did a PC tune up thru AVG recently, as well as cleaned & defragmented the drives. Our laptop still runs at snail's pace, especially when we are initially trying to open any application after having logged off, or even turned off, computer for lengthy periods of time. Do we need more memory? Or is there an issue with the processor?

"Do we need more memory? Or is there an issue with the processor?"

My crystal is a bit cloudy this morning. Do you think you could tell us which processor & how much RAM you have?

Could it be you have a bunch of garbage loading in the background at startup?

You shouldn't install more than one AntiVirus program. I assume the online provider stuff is AVirus? Choose one or the other. Malwarebytes is OK to leave and use.

I suggest you try Microsoft Security Essentials instead of AVG. Get it at the link below. If you don't have service pack 3 installed do that before installing MSE.

I don't think AVG is bad at all, since it's the one I use. This is obviously a hardware issue. What type of processor do you have and how much RAM do you have installed?

You may need all the pieces to the puzzle before you can solve it.

AVG is not bad and I didn't say it was. Microsoft security essentials is very light on resources. That is why I suggested it. At any rate, I think there are two AV programs installed, which is not a good thing.
