Can someone please tell me which is the best processor in the bellow examples:
Both Packard Bell Laptops running same spec apart from these processors:
700mhz AMD Duron
or
600Mhz Intel Pentium III Xeon with SpeedstepI am not sure which one to buy so some advice would be much appreciated.
Difference in speed or performance?
Thanks
DarrenW

it would be faster, since the duron is like an intel celeron, basic CPU, no L2 cache, or, in amd's case, "3D!" instructions (SSE for intel)

I never new Packard Bell or anybody, sold
XEONs in laptops. Sounds like a scam. Even
if htey were avail in laptops the power draw
on them is prob much larger than the duron,
battery life is gonna suck.

It is definately a Xeon because I have used a DOS Diagnostic program called PC Check that checks Processor speed and which type of chip but really I need to know which is the faster 700Mhz Duron or 600Mhz Pentium III Xeon

Put it this way.
A Pentium 2.6ghz XEON is MORE EXPENSIVE than a 2.8ghz Pentium 4, the new top of the range!
www.pricewatch.com will show you under CPU.

It really depends on what you would want to use it for. The Pentium is probably better at multitask work, like XxxFrancisxxxUSA says they are the Pro version often found in high end servers. The duron is probably no slouch either. As 666 says they aren't just crippled Athlons. I still say that AMDs are not your best choice for a laptop application. They run hot and despite a previous response, AMDs use more power than Pentiums (check out the power supply requirements for AMD desktops).

There are a few things to consider here.
The Duron is based on Athlon Architecture which means it has 3dnow extensions which are good for 3d gaming but only really come into their own in conjunction with a decent graphics card. The only laptops ive seen with good graphics cards are the dell inspirions. Also a duron only has 128KB Cache. This isn't poor but its not exactly good against the xeons.
Having working with xeon chips its obvious that a 600Mhz Xeon is based upon pentium 3 architecture. The main difference in these chips are the amount of cache they carry.
There are 3 different flavours, 512KB, 1MB, 2MB with the 2MB chips costing roughly £1500 about 2 years ago.
Find out how much memory is on the chip? also im suprised to see a xeon in a laptop as i have only seen them in high end workstations and servers and as packard bell target the home user it confuses me as to why they would use such a high end chip?

You show me a link where a XEON was ever
used in a laptop, let alone Packard Bells
crummy low-end products. I'm sorry but your
PC-Check program is wrong. Its probably
misdetecting a cyrix or celeron chip, if
your lucky its a vanilla P3.
The closest thing on packardbells website is
an EasyNote VX+ or EasyNote Sc. There is no
mention of XEON on any of these pages.

Truth is that a XENON processor isnt Professional at all, its a piece of crap, as all intell is, the xenon processor is manufactured for SERVERS NOT LAPTOPS, they will have less capabilities than the amd chip which DOES have 3D and L2 cache. the xenon processor is in compatition with AMD's MP processor and they both are usually used in servers with DUAL processors. i have an HP laptop with an AMD duron 1.0GHZ processor and have had no problems with the temp issue.
