AMD What?

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ or AMD Athlon 64 3000+?

I assume you mean AMD Athlon 64 3000+ and if that is the case then AMD Athlon 64 3000+ out preforms a Celeron D by a wide margin.

Celeron D's and Semprons are what they put in Home Depot inventory computers, dont go near them, especially now when an Athlon 64 3000+ is dirt cheap.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC 2.7ghz
2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 7900GT
SATA II 2x 200gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI

Man, I just saw an XP3800/2.4GHz Socket AM2 (!)for $109 on Newegg's splashpage, no tax and free shipping. Crap. I just bought an XP3700/2.2GHz Socket939 for $100! The prices are dropping faster that I can get the order in.

Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime;
Then industry pollutes the water and kills all the fish.

Yeah but wait until the X2 4800+ drops, by the time you are ready to make the jump the 4800+ will be under 200 dollars and that will be well worth the upgrade unlike jumping from the 3700+ to 3800+ where is is hardly any diff preformance between them. Just overclock that 3700+ to 2.6ghz and you will be hitting the same speed as the FX-55 which is easy to do with this processor.

No contest really.

The Athlon64 is your answer. Get the 939 socket, preferably the Venice core.
