I'm planning on attempting to unlock the multiplier on my cpu this weekend. My question is does a higher multiplier verses a higher fsb work better?I have a Abit KG7 mb that has soft menu III that allows alot of incremental changes.Or is this a trial and error thing to see which way will be best for my system? If I go with a higher multiplier do I automatically need to increase vcore to 1.85v?My power supply is 350w and I have 3 case fans along with a small fan on the chipset.Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks Mike.....

Did you buy the unlocking kit or are you gonna try one of the "home remedies" to unlock your XP?

The 1700 runs at 1.47Ghz (11.0 x 133 FSB)...correct? You wanna stay somewhat close to that speed...so you wanna LOWER your multiplier & RAISE your FSB. For instance...10.0 x 150 FSB = 1.50 Ghz. Your biggest performance gain will be in the higher FSB, not necessarily in the CPU speed itself. The example above is only a 2% increase in CPU speed, but a 13% increase in FSB speed!

I'm going to do it with super glue and a rear window defogger repair kit.If I set the multiplier to 12.5X133 without touching the fsb it will go to 1.662.I'm at 139 with fsb now.Seems to be a bit weird at anything higher. If I can go 12.5 X 139 it'll put me at 1.740mhz.Probably will do it today. Will post my results. Thanks for the reply.

I'm confused...if your multiplier is locked, how can you set it to 12.5x? Changing the multiplier setting should have no effect...it should always be recognized as 11.0x until it is unlocked. As I said before, your 1700+ runs at 1.47 Ghz (11.0 x 133), I don't know how you're hitting 12.5x. Also as I said, you wanna LOWER your multiplier setting, not raise it. The higher FSB is where your performance increase is, not the multiplier!

jam do you even read his post before responding? He said he was gonna "do it with super glue and a rear window defogger repair kit" Raising the multiplier or fsb will give performance increase. Probably one of the more stable things to do is lower the multiplier and raise the fsb to around what your current ghz speed is now. but since you say only going to 139 fsb is about max you wont be getting that much out of it. Usually in general the 1600-1800 chips go to about 12.0 or 1900 speed because they are made in the same batch. You're probably not gonna get anything stable past 1900+ 12.0 multiplier. The 1900-2100 are made in the same batches and they usually go to about 2200+. I unlocked my 1800+ and only got an extra .5 out of the multiplier before it got hectic.

54v4g3: I guess I misread. It seemed like he was saying that he already had it set at 12.5x. "If I set the multiplier to 12.5X133 without touching the fsb it will go to 1.662"...but apparently he was referring to what he could do AFTER he unlocks his XP. The other stuff you wrote was basically restating what I had already posted.

Seems my Abit KG7 board does'nt support the 12.5 multipier it jumps from 12 to 13.I'm at 12x136 fsb gives me 1.632 ghz. It's reading now as a XP 2000 in Wcpuid.I'm inching up to see if I can get to 139.Little at a time.I'm idle now at 36-37 degrees.Cover off,a few big fans.I was mentioning the 12.5x before I had actually unlocked the chip.I had done it the following morning.I also increased vcore to 1.85v and vdimm to 2.675 from 2.6v.This is my first venture into overclocking and having some fun with it.I've learned alot just reading the posts here.
Thanks Mike....
