I want to buy a new processor without changing motherboard so i am wondering which is best for socket 462 I have an amd sempron 2600+ which runs at 1.8 ghz

It's not cost effective. You'd have to pay out close to $100 for a Barton core Athlon XP...that is, IF you can find one. The performance wouldn't be that significantly better to justify the expense.
If you have a decent board that supports 400FSB (preferrably one based on the nForce2 chipset) & you also have PC3200 RAM, simply overclock your CPU to 2.2GHz & ride out what you have for as long as you can.

I'm not gonna recommend another socket A board & CPU because it would be a complete waste of money. What motherboard do you currently have? Make/model/chipset? And what speed RAM do you have...PC2700 or PC3200?
Your next upgrade should be a complete rebuild...that will mean board, CPU, video card, & power supply. If you have PC2700 RAM, you'll have to move up to PC3200. You'd be looking at over $300

yeh i know I I have a asrock k7s14gx I'm not sure how to check the speed of my RAM but I know I would have to do a complete rebuild

how will a sempron 3300 compare next to a p4 3.0 ghz? i know the p4 will beat it.. but i want to know how far off the sempron will be. I am looking for the best value/performance cpu for a socket A mobo, as my athlon xp 2.4 ghz blew when my fan died :| i cant seem to find another one like it anywhere.. any help please?!?!!
