If you have a board that allows easy overclocking get a mobile Athlon XP 2600+ instead.

Do not type anything in this space.

The 2600+ Barton runs at 1917MHz (11.5 x 166MHz) & has 512K L2 cache

The 2800+ Sempron has a slightly higher clock speed at 2000MHz (12 x 166MHz), but only has 256K L2 cache. It's based on the Thoroughbred core.

I'd go with the Barton...with the right board & RAM, you should have no problem overclocking well beyond 2000MHz

Excellent advice & a lot cheaper too! I answered the question, but didn't even consider that option. But you MUST have the right board to be able to run the mobile CPU. Which board are you working with?

Newegg has em for $95. Even with the added cost of a HSF, it'll still be cheaper. Check the customer reviews:

If you want to get a 2600+ for half the money that you mentioned, go to NewEgg. They have the 2600+ or $79 Shipped.

Good Luck

"tigerdirect.com has the sempron 3000+ 512 Cache (333 FSB) at 2 Ghz. for $59 after rebate"

Nice find! It's the OEM version with no HSF though...still a great deal because it's based on the Barton core, so it's roughly the equivilent of a 2800+ Athlon XP.

They also have the 1.8GHz (266FSB) Duron for $20 after rebate!

You DO realize Athlon 64's are cheaper, right?

They also have Athlon 64 type Semprons for even cheaper, which would blow either of those CPU's you listed out of the water.

Tigerdirect also had the Athlon 64 3000+ (754) for $99 after rebate ($50) a few days ago, but I missed it. Anyway, right now they kick out a whole box for $199, just the HDD sucks, but is has the Sempron 3k+ in there as well.

I just bought the Sempron, we'll see how it goes next week.

Hopefully you didn't buy the Sempron for the rig that's listed in your sig. Even at $59, it's not a worthwhile upgrade.

And how come you're only running your 2600+ at 185MHz FSB? It should do 200MHz (2.3GHz) with a vcore increase

No, the Sempron is for another box with a Chaintech
7NJL6 and 400Mhz DDR, that probably leaves some room for play as well.

I need to take my (sign.) box in pieces again and figure
out how to increase the voltage. Eveything in the bios is locked. I tried 189 and 200 FSB and it doesn't start, but I
think I overlooked the AGP settings, probably have to
adjust those to 66 fixed, and maybe tune the memory
settings better as well. Whereelse can I adjust the voltage?
With the pencil on the chip?

If your board doesn't support voltage changes, you can try a wire mod. It may sound a little scarey, but it's not a big deal. I experimented with it with my Sempron & KT600 board. I did some reading about it, then posted a question & johnoh came to the rescue & set me straight. Once he explained it, it was easy to figure which pin holes in the socket to jumper.

The bad thing about it is you don't have the luxury of easy changes. So if you're currently running at 1.65v & figure 1.70v will probably be enough, you'd have to pull the HSF & CPU, place one or two tiny "U" shaped wires to connect two pin holes, then replace the CPU, reapply paste, & reinstall the HSF. If it's not enough & you need to go to 1.75v, you'd have to go thru the whole process again.

Have a look at my post about it:

You just repeated response 10?? what's that all about??

I thought I explained it well enough...if you don't have the option to change the voltage in the BIOS, you'll have to do a wire mod.

My bad. Wire modification refers to modifying the connections of that L1 bridge, correct? Or is there another way? Once I do that, I should also try to unlock the multiplier, or is there a potential downside?

How about the Sempron? Should it be able to run the 200 FSB as well?

"Wire modification refers to modifying the connections of that L1 bridge, correct?"

No. I thought I explained it clear enough. You remove the CPU, insert a "U" shaped wire into the proper holes in the socket, then reinstall the CPU. I provided a link detailing my experience with it & I think there are other links available there. IMO, painting the bridges is much more difficult...& I believe it's L7 bridges, not L1...L1 is for unlocking the multiplier
