Hi there.
Just a quick one...
Could someone please tell me which is faster for general computing (office work) running Win 2K - Pentium III 451mhz or the Pentium Celeron 733mhz.
You can assume they both have the same amount of RAM, same size HDD.

u wan faster?? definately would be pentium 3!! but as u know p3 is more expensive compared to celeron processor.. since u are only doing some general office work,i think u should go for celeron. because it will do the job and it can said to be more stable than p3 in term of memory management which crash less...:~)

for all intents and purposes probably equal, or slight edge to the p3.
I'm not sure how a p3 crashes less due to memory management, especially when the memory controller is on the motherboard.
MCSE, MCSA Messaging, baby!

only difference between the 2 is the P3 has more cache and it sounds better when you're trying to impress people
i would give the celeron a slight nudge simply because of the higher clock speed but because of the cache difference they're nearly equalyou should probly get the P3 for more cache but if money's short get the celeron
what is painfully obvious to one person might be just painful to the other

P3 slot 1 processors had the same cache as P2's. Their big improvement was the SSE instructions.
Socket P3's actually had less cache in them than P2's, but it didn't matter because their cache ran faster.

One advantage to an OC'er is that the P-3 450Mh slot one processors with its 100Mh FSB can be reliably overclocked at 503Mh if the system board allows it and you use PC133 memory.
I hunt for these at used parts sells and can often pick one up for $5 or so if it's fan has gone bad or noisy. I take a $3 heavy "Celeron" heatsink with fan, drill a few holes, add paste and bolt it on. Gets reasonable performance out of old P2/P3 100Mh FSB boards.
The Celeron 733mhz does not overclock as well.

the point is that the celoron is faster because you can make a cpu with 10mb of cache and slow cache bandwith speed or have 198k of cache that has very high bus bandwith. the thing is that its all in the details.
