Subject: which cpu skt775OS: winxpCPU/Ram: amd/2x256ddr |
Comment: Hi guys, im coverting my setup from amd to pentium. Im choosing the tried & trusted ASUS - P5800SE which is going for a very good price these days. Im just a little confused over which SKT775-CPU to put on it. Could someone please tell which which of these has the best 'bang for buck' along with overclocking ability. Cheers. http://www.savastore.com/products/components/processors/socket-775/

Reply: (edit)No brainer, the cheaper one since the only difference appears to be the 200Mhz extra on the 640J (due to it's 16X multiplier). However staying with AMD would have been the best bang for buck platform IMHO, but your decisions are indeed yours to make. http://www.legionhardware.com/html/doc.php?id=439 I agree; computing.net does need an edit button.

Reply: (edit)I'd personally get either the 650 or 551. On the Socket T platform, these are the cheapest procs that can still drop the multiplier and support X64. The 650 is faster because of its 2mb L2 Cache though. The 550 doesn't support x64 if that's of any importance to you. BUT...........this is not the time to buy any of these procs because the marketting of Conroe and Pressler will almost certainly result in a price drop for the above processors. Wait about a month if you can.

Reply: (edit)try the 521, as you can see from my sig its the one i use and has amazing overclocking abilities without you needing to raise the core voltage. it is 32/64bit compliant, hypertreading and a host of other functions. NOTE- as with any Prescott, if you plan to overclock then be ready to use alternative coolers and not the stock heatsink or fan. Custom Built 2.8Prescott @ 3.6Ghz, 32/64bit,HyperThreading. WaterCooled. Asus P5ND2-SLI 2G DualChannelDDR2 4300 Win XP Pro
