CPU/Ram: P4 1.7Ghz/512Mb
Comment:

Hellow Friends,
I recently bought a new vedio card and I want to couple it with a stronger processor. My current processor of P4 1.7GHz 400FSB is too slow.
I would like to have atleast a 2.8GHz with 533FSB with 512KB cache.

I dont want to spend on a full system upgrade yet because my system is still solid enough for general use. It is only for gaming that I want to add in a faster processor.

I live in Goa, India and have contacted almost all the hardware guys I know but none of them are having any socket 478 processor. The most polite guy said that I should wait and later upgrade to a dual core system, however, others have said that I should throw out my computer and go in for a new one.
I would just like to get a bit faster processor, even if it is a used one.
If you guys can help that will be great.
Are there any forums or sites where people speicfically talk about used processors or sell used processors for cheap?
Any help will be appreciated.
Sarosh.

You've been given this info in the gaming forum, but I'll hit on a few of the points again

- dual-core processors are not useful for gaming. I believe I posted a site explaining why

- have you tried overclocking yet? I answered your earlier question about overclocking software, but don't know if you tried it or not. Here's a site I just dug up for someone else:

http://www.ocinside.de/index_e.html?/html/links/ocsoft_links.html

- there are plenty of vendors that ship worldwide, you're gonna have to find them. Have you looked on eBay? You have to be aware that the majority of the people that use these forums are from the US & Canada where parts are easy to get. You really should state that you're from India & it would also help if you posted the make/model of your motherboard.

ASUS P4V533-MX

It's a cheap budget board based on a crappy VIA chipset

Outpost.com ships internationally...why not just cash in on this $120 CPU/board combo deal that was mentioned by another poster yesterday:

Well, got to Fry's otpost and look for some 478 pin p4s. I know they have some cause i have a 478 celeron and i wanted to up grade. there not all incredibly exspensive. i think you can get a p4 3.4Ghz for $289.
It is pretty fast, supports hyper-threading, 800fsb. Make sure you motherboard and support hyper-threading and 800 mhz FSB. Also make sure they ship to india if you decide to buy it.
That is the link below

1. the Celeron is not good for gaming

2 his board only supports CPUs with 400 or 533FSB & up to 512k L2 cache

3. 3.06GHz is the max his board supports

eBay is the best source in your situation, the only snag is, not every seller ships worldwide but you should be able to find at least one that will.

Hey Jam,
You are really helpful.
Thanks so much.
I am sorry, but I always get greatly confused when ever I am presented with such situations.
I dont know what to do? Should I just upgrade my processor? Should I got for a new agp board?
My hardware guy tells me that within a few months I wont be able to find an agp board here from Goa, India.
What do you think about the future of agp? Will the prices of agp boards drop a bit more in the coming few months before they drop prices?

I did find some processors on www.ebay.in but they are not good deals. The 2.8GHz processor itself cost about 9000Rs (204$) where as the local hardware chap here is offering me a 3.0GHz HT processor with a gigabyte m/b with an agp and pcie slot for 12,700Rs (295$)
I really dont know what do buy dude.
My computer is working just fine, and the only reason I am even thinking of a processor is just to get the best out of my 6600GT.

And to add to the confusion this guy tells me that if I dont buy a m/b soon then the m/b available in the coming few months will only support sata drives and thus my hd and cd-rw and dvd rom will be useless then.

I am checking out the stuff you send me about outpost, it takes me time even to understand these things, so give me time.
I hope you will help me out in the future too, jam.
Thanks very much,
Sarosh.

Hey Jam,
I hope this is not too much to ask for, but would you mind communicating with me directly by email in your free time?
The more I read about this the more I am getting confused.
The board/cpu combo you gave me is a very good value for money, but it has only 2 ata slots and I have 3 ata drives, one HD, one cd writer and one dvd rom.
Besides, it says that the board supports 400MHz ddr ram, do you think this is backward compatable with my 333MHz ddr ram?

Jam, it would be great if you found me some such good deal on a single P4 processor of about 2.8GHz. That would be ideal for me.
Because my full system is working fine for me, if I can just get my cpu speed to about 2.8Ghz that would be great. Even is someone is selling a used one in good condition I think that would be good too.
I hope I am not asking too much.
Sarosh.

Buying that newer AGP card without thinking about other factors was the #1 cause of your dilemma.

Well,
I was fed up with my fx5200 and I thought of going in for a 6600 which would cost about 5000Rs. I thought I would use my system with this card for atleast another 2 years.
But then I found an Aopen 6600GT for 108$ only (thats only Rs.4700/-) and I just told my cousin to buy it for me when he came to India.
I could not let that offer of having a 6600GT for Rs.4700/- pass me by when it cost anywhere between 12,000Rs to 15,000Rs here in India.

However, now that I have this gup, I am just thinking of coupling it with a faster processor. I dont need a whole system.
I was actually quite shocked to find that I would not be able to upgrade my processor from a local vendor because they all say that they dont have a socket 478 processor.

However, I am also willing to settle for a used socket 478 processor or a refurbished one, like my 6600GT which was refurbished.
I just dont know where to look for cheap old processors.
I have tried several places here in Goa, India and no one has them.
If you find some good deals on a P4 of about 2.8GHz please anyone let me know.
Thanks again,
Sarosh.

That "guy" that is telling you all this stuff is not very knowledgeable.

There are Pentium 4's available to you in India thru E-Bay.
This one looks like boxed CPU with HS/fan. $138 USD

Of course, you will have to make sure it is a 478 socket processor.

Yea dude,
The thing is that I am totally satisfied with my computer, and the only reason I want to upgrade my CPU is to get the best out of my GPU.
There are many issues with upgrading to an agp m/b, such as support of pci-e vedio card, ram support and no. of ide cables.
I dont think it is wise for me to upgrade my full comp, just a processor upgrade would be great.
