I think it was anandtech.com that recently reviewed 6 new nforce2 amd boards. They all performed ~8% faster than Via KT400 based boards.

Hehe.... Correction...

"The Editor's Choice Gold Award for best value motherboard goes to the Epox 8RDA+. The combination of speed, solid features and a bargain-basement price are what makes the Epox 8RDA+ our Editor's Choice Gold Award for best value motherboard in the Athlon XP market. It doesn't hurt that the Epox 8RDA+ ended up overclocking the best out of any other motherboard. Value users should also be pleased with Epox's excellent tech support and RMA policy."

It all comes down to which features best fit your needs. The Asus board is recommended if you're planning on running "SerialATA RAID" (Serial HDD's aren't available yet, although the feature is there if you want to upgrade your hard drives too..) Asus also features Dual NIC's, but unless you're planning to utilize ICS and use your board as a bridge, this feature is useless as well. The Asus is priced approximately $40 to $50 more too.

As far as memory, the Corsair DIMM's seem to have run into a few problems from what I'm seeing on the various OC channels and message boards. (Thank God I went with OCZ)

All of these boards function as good as the KT400 motherboards when operating with one stick of memory, but the advantage of the nForce chipset is the ability to expand your memory bandwidth from 64 to 128 bit when two or three DIMMs are inserted. Performance in everyday use will pretty much be the same, but you will see an improvement in 3D gaming.

If you want the Dual NIC's and SerialATA, go with the Asus. If you want FAST, overclockable, great support and affordable, go with the EPoX.

Guess which one I chose...

(here's a hint)

**************************************
My new system:

EPoX 8RDA+ nForce2 Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP1700+ @ 166 X 12 = XP2400+
(2) 512 MB DIMM's of CL2 OCZ PC3200 DDR SDRAM
(in 128 Bit Dual Channel Mode)
Gainward GeForce4 Ti4200 @ 300c/550m

Hey, Macdaddy...
In your spec you say you have a Maxtor HDD with 8Mb cache. I thought Western Digital Caviar Special Editions weere the only drives with an 8MB cache...have maxtor jumped on the bandwaggon? If so, how fast and quiet is it?
(Just looking at an additional drive myself)

thats sweet. Is that default settings UTTLAMA.

Integer yea maxtor I got it at compusa for $139 w/$40 rebate I was going for the wd 8mb but the price was right on the max. They got them up to 200g.Googlegear.com has 120g,160g,& 200g.I have'nt benchmarked it yet so i cant give you figures, but it seems extremely quick.Owe yea I cant even hear it running.

My motherboard is kinda buggy still, I'm trying diff.vid. drivers. Some drivers wont even run 3dmark2001se like 40.72.

I'm not even going to o/c this system it's fast enough for me as is.

have a good one,macdaddy

That score isn't default, but it isn't really tweaked either. The new motherboard is only a couple of days old, so I'm still burning it in, seeing how much further I can take it. I'm currently at 9.5 x 204, but I'm having some stability problems and will probably ease off a bit. Still, 9.5x204=1938 MHz = almost a 2400+, but w/ 200 FSB and dual channel DDR400. This is a sweeeet board, and considering that my CPU is OC'd ~468 MHz, not a bad setup for a $58 CPU and $100 mobo.

Thats a good o/c.I just got back from a computer show down here they have once a month(ft.laud.fla.)one of the vendors had 2 of the epox boards same model as you have I was very tempted and take my 1800xp out of my ecs k7s5a mb and upgrade, but gotta save some money right now for XMAS comin up.I'm definately getting this board in january though,I read some good things about this board.

I gave you the wrong figures on my benchmarks if you go to madonion .com and look up my scores of 11935,11924 and there is some others they were done a few weeks ago and i did o/c the 4600ti card a little at a time but not the cpu.Go to where you enter numbers and you'll see some of my scores under name brock.I also got some scores with my Athlon 1800xp system
w/ 4200ti geforce i'll have to look them up later i got some 10,000's and something scores,i guess not bad with a ecs k7s5a mobo.

have a good one, macdaddy
