Comment:

Right I'm running a Barton 2800+ on a ASUS A7V600 board. This is running in a cheiftec server case (old alienware style) so my case temp is about 23C. However my machine mysteriously turns itself after about 5 minutes if I'm lucky. After some investigation I've found that the switching off occurs as soon as my CPU hits 50C. How am I suppost to get around this when just loading windows gets my cpu to 45C without buying a huge cooling system?

CPU temp of 45-50C is not overheating. Check your BIOS to see if there's a setting for overheat protection...it may be set too low.

Many times, shutdown is an indication of an bad or weak PSU. How many watts & how many amps of the +12v rail?

i've had this problem too, and i fixed it by:

1)cleaing out all the dust in my cpu fan -_-"...which shouldn't of been there

2)going into BIOS and changing the temperature warning level

First thanks for the suggestions, my computer is a dust free environment (I've checked). But it does get interesting, on inspection of the BIOS I had a Q-fan Control that was disabled, I enabled this and selected full fan speed. This now allows to get to 52C before my machine dies, horrah, a step in the right direction.

As per Jam's question it gets interesting my VCORE voltage is 1.60V in BIOS but alternates between 1.744 and 1.728V once into windows. As for my +12V voltage BIOS reads this as 11.84V but once within windows this tends to stay at 11.84 but can occasionally dip (well pretty often) to 11.77V.

But coming to mention it the PSU is getting on a bit, do you think this is the reason for my problems? It was originally in a AMD 1800+ machine for around 3 months before being upgraded.

Thanks again lads and/or ladies.

After further investigation yesterday it appeared that my PSU had died and refused to work in any shape or form, it also decided though to take my processor for the ride. So thanks for your help but it means that I'm left needing to buy another processor and PSU.

Cheers anyway.
