Quick question for everyone out there... what's a good motherboard for a XP 2600+ processor?

The 2 boards mentioned above are both good boards. But, it depends on what you want to do. If you overclock, the 2 boards above are perfect. They don't rip A HOLE IN YOUR POCKET either

Thanks for the info. Any preference on the two? I checked them both out and either seems okay, but I'm leaning toward the Abit.
Thanks again.

the abit is the better of the 2 for overclocking, but the asus board has gigabit ethernet

if overclocking is a main priority then go for the abit but if that doesn't make a difference then it's a toss up

but if you dont overclock at all and you need something with onboad video then those boards wont be a good fit for you

i shouldve asked what your plans are for this computer

Thanks a lot everyone for the replies. I wasn't really planning on OCing but I might. I'm sorry that I forgot to mention what I wanted the MB for. DOH! It's a computer I'm putting together for my son. As far as video is concerned I'll probably just use a FX5200 Ultra I have sitting around. Thanks again for your prompt and excellent replies.

OR....if you don't mind playing the rebate game, the Soyo Dragon is FREE after $60 rebate. I ordered one last week from zipzoomfly.com & just received confirmation it's been shipped :)

Hi giggles,

I have no idea what's up with all the rebates. They've been doing it for quite a while though. A friend from work recently bought 2 Soyo P4 boards online, both free after rebate. He received them in just a few days.

I did some googling & there are a lot of complaints about delays in getting the rebate checks & also rumors about Soyo going bankrupt. I could not find anything to support the bankruptcy claims. There was even a statement released by Soyo to refute the rumors. It appears these rumors date back as far as 2000.

As for rebate delays, it states right on the rebate form, "if you have not received your check 14 weeks after rebate program postmark date, please contact rebate@soyousa.com". That's 3.5 months! You just gotta be sure to follow the rebate instructions to the letter & make copies of everything...then make sure to keep them in a safe place. It seems that a lot of the complaints came from people who didn't bother to make copies, or couldn't find them 3 months later...then when Soyo ask for the copies for confirmation, they were SOL.

"yeah but dont they lose money by giving away these boards for free after mir? how do they make a profit?"

I've wondered that myself, but if it wasn't profitable for the manufacturer to offer them, they wouldn't do it. Rebates attract buyers, it helps the seller to clear out stock, & it provides investment capital. Plus they count on people being lazy...some won't even bother, some will screw up following the instructions, some will miss the deadline, etc. I saw a recent report about cell phone rebates that said 95% never got paid out...& it wasn't because the rebate was a scam, it was because people simply didn't follow thru. If that's any indication of a general trend, then rebates are definitely a good deal for the manufacturer!

you know, i always thought that they took all the capital from the product's sales and put it in a bank account and just let it accrue interest and so by holding the money for 3 months or whatever, the company matches the amount given back to the consumer, in the rebate, by interest

but that would never work for the free after mir deals because the company would never be able to make $70 x (number of boards sold)
over a period of 3 months

you are right...

Rule of thumb for corporate sales is Markup (Cost price + Markup = Sell price, oftentimes markups can be up to 100% and sometimes higher if there is more demand for the item being marketed.) but in a free after instant rebate promo, markups offer little or no direct profit to the vendor.

However the vendor is a able to catch a big break by instead offering a mail-in rebate, knowing fully well that "some won't even bother, some will screw up following the instructions, some will miss the deadline" now factor markups in there, what you have is a win-win platform for the vendor so long as it is a MIR promo.

sometimes i cant help but notice that they make it difficult for you to get those rebate forms in, almost like they are looking for ways to get the consumer to screw it up for themselves

"Check Soyo's site says xp nothing about mobiles"

This isn't an issue for me because I have no intention to run a mobile in mine. But I wouldn't expect SOYO or any board manufacturer to list mobile CPU support in the specs for desktop motherboards, simply because mobiles aren't designed for desktops...even though they work in them. Well, most of them...lol

I would think from the manufacturer's standpoint, a MIR promo is better than offering a discounted "sale" price. With a sale promo, they'd "lose" money on every board sold...but with a MIR promo, they take into account the "some won't even bother, some will screw up following the instructions, some will miss the deadline" factor, & I'm sure it comes out to their benefit.

GOOD LUCK GETTING YOUR SOYO REBATE!

SOYO BUYERS BEWARE!

I got a tigerdirect Soyo Barebone kit K7VME back in June (" FIVE MONTHS + AGO ") and still haven't received any rebates from SOYO YET. They still owe me $70 in rebates.

I have contacted them numerous times and all I can get from them is apology for delay's over and over again. I am not the only one either I have several other friends and family that are having same problems with SOYO!

This being said I will probably write them again. And as for tigerdirect.com I will never order from them again. They take no responsibility for what they sell. I contacted them about the rebates and they could care less. They told me I need to contact soyo. Nor will I ever buy any SOYO products anymore!

Oh yea the Soyo K7VME Barebone kit what a joke! PSU was DOA. Cost me $17 in shipping costs for RMA got another one and tried to fit a Athlon XP 2600+ cpu in it and the OEM CPU fan rubbed on the power supply. The speakers sucked, and cd rom was noisy. I just ended up buying another case, cd rom, new 400w psu, and floppy.

Heck I bought some stuff from Circuit City back after thanksgiving and already received one rebate.
