I have an athlon xp2600 cpu, i recently bought a new volcano 11 hsf combo. after i put the hsf on the unit and plug everything back in the computer powers on, for about 5 seconds, no beeps and shuts itself off. even if i wait and try it again the unit repeats the process. i have one buy one removed all components and attempted to power the unit on with the same results. so i have illimited the possibility of a defeated part. i think it may be the power supply but im not sure can someone please help me asap.

If your system was running OK before you changed the HSF, that's where you should start looking...it may not be seated on the core properly

if its a k7n2 motherboard u will be fine when the cpu heats up too fast then it shuts of the pc.. If that the case I would check ur thermal paste and the seating of the heatsink.

I wonder if you chipped your CPU installing the HSF.

The CPU core can chip is you rock the flat surface of the HSF on it. The ceramic of the CPU core is very brittle. You would notice small chips of ceramic mixed with your thermal paste or imbedded in the thermal pad. The edges of the core would be rough and not sharpely defined. It's generally pretty obvious but you have to take the HSF off again and look at the CPU core. I don't have your MOBO but I had similar behavior when I chipped a CPU core changing the HSF.

I know its not much of a fix, but this is the second MSI KT4V that ive installed for a client and this is also the second time the same problem has happened to me.. powers up just fine for about 3-5 seconds then shuts off, if you listen closely to the pc speaker you can hear it making a low and high pitch sound untill you take out the power plug... I let it sit for about 45min and plugged it in again...and never had the problem again. probably the last MSI I will purchase.. oh and by the way I did switch it out with another powersupply and it still did the same thing..processor and ram tests good also. Good luck
