Subject: what have i broken?OS: xp sp1CPU/Ram: amd 64 3200 venice/1gb ra |
Comment: I've just built a new system. amd 64 3200 asus a8v mobo 1gb corsair 3200 seagate 250gb sata hd antec smartpower 2.01 i installed windows xp pro sp1 fine, then had a look at the overclock program that came with the mobo, after trying the 103% setting i accidentally hit the 110% one. The pc immediately switched off. It will get to the first windows xp screen then freeze, it also came up with file \i386\ntkrnlmp.exe error code 4 when trying to boot. i tried to reinstall windows and it came up with that and similar errors. I've tried the ram in my old pc, in fact it's in there now and working fine, is it the cpu or should it have not booted that far if it was fried? I can't believe i did this to my new pc, hope you guys can help me...

Reply: (edit)"i tried to reinstall windows and it came up with that and similar errors" Why would you overclock using a program instead of the BIOS? Can you get into safe mode or not? I'm not sure if resetting the BIOS will help or not...it's would appear to be a software issue caused by the overclocking program...maybe if you go into the BIOS & underclock, it will compensate for the software overclock? If it does, get into Windows, reset that program, then uninstall it & overclock the "right" way Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8.5 x 200MHz 768MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7 Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro

Reply: (edit)Asus motherboards come with AI Booster, which lets you adjust the FSB on the fly, as well as voltages, etc. I'm not sure though, if it takes extra precaution, like locking your agp/pci ratio. Also, Asus motherboards can recover themselves from a bad overclock. Instead of having to set a reset jumper or remove the battery, you just need to reboot and it'll go back to the settings before the bad overclock (There's also a key combo to have it boot up with factory defaults, but I forgot what it was) As for what's wrong, it could be any number of things. You'll have to do the basics to narrow it down (remove everything except the basic stuff like video and ram, and see if any of those stuff were messed up) Is the 110% meaning it's a 10% overclock? If so, that's not much I think (not sure about AMD though, but for intel's, they can take a 20% overclock easily). Just make sure your computer isn't overclocked anymore (go into bios). Maybe without the pci lock, the hard drives got messed up?

Reply: (edit)Asus motherboards recover themselves from a bad overclock: http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/cpr.htm And yes, I learned how to overclock using my asus motherboard. I've done super crazy settings that would have killed other systems. All I have to do is try to boot up the system a couple of times...eventually it'll boot right up. I don't even remember where the jumper on my motherboard is anymore lol, I just need to hit the power button a few times Not all asus motherboards have it...check out: http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/feature.htm

Reply: (edit)A quick google search about your board turned up the following...just as I suspected, that stupid overclocking program is what's causing your problem. You have to disable it & overclock the "right" way: "The A8N-SLI Deluxe also has a "non-delay overclocking system" called AI NOS. In principal, AI NOS is supposed to intelligently overclock your system anywhere from 3 to 10 percent (depending on the setting) whenever CPU loads increase. The boosts may be small overall, but they only occur during processor-intensive tasks, like playing a video game or encoding an MP3, helping to add a few frames or shave off a few seconds in processing time. When it works, it works fantastically." "Although, if AI NOS were implemented, shall we say, intelligently, this would be much easier to use. In our testing, we chose a 7% overclock and booted up the machine. We were treated to a total system lock directly upon entering into Windows. However once we lowered AI NOS to 3%, the system worked fine. It seems that the automatic nature of AI NOS doesn't bother testing if your CPU and RAM can overclock successfully. Instead, you are left to turn on the feature, and then fail repeatedly until you realize that AI NOS is the culprit. AI NOS works only if you know the capabilities of your system ahead of time." http://hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST-15177-1502-35-35-x Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8.5 x 200MHz 768MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7 Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro

Reply: (edit)what phil? i'm willing to replace it, i accept responsibility, i'm asking on here if you guys would have any idea what it is i have broken. but thanks for the lecture anyway. so if it's not my ram, what's the next most likely culprit and how can i check it? If it's booting to the first xp load screen (with the little scrolling thing under the xp logo) before it freezes, what does that mean? If it's getting that far is my cpu ok? how do i go about resetting my bios?

Reply: (edit)also, i can't boot it in safe mode, or any other mode. in the bios it says the cpu is running at 2000mhz. no mention of being able to change it from bios.

Reply: (edit)You did NOT break anything!! Did you bother to read the info I posted in reponse #8? It's that stupid overclocking setting that you shouldn't have used. There's absolutely nothing wrong with your hardware! Go into the BIOS, find the N.O.S. Option under JumperFree Configuration & DISABLE it! GEEZ, read the friggin manual Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8.5 x 200MHz 768MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7 Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro
