Subject: what can I upgrade my CPU too?
Comment:

Hello, I am hoping someone can give me some advice as I know nothing about hardware. I have a Supermicro motherboard PII/PIII P6SBA BX chipset with AGP slot 1. I am currently running an Intel Celeron 466A and would like to upgrade the processor but have no idea what I can put in it. I am hoping someone can advise me as I am not sure about how the slot 1 will affect what I can use. Thanks in advance!

Your motherboard manual says that your board will support upto 1ghz Processor with 100mhz FSB (pentium III Processor I think ?) However it also sugests that the multiplier only goes upto x8 which would suggest a top speed of 800mhz

Hi DB7

Thank you for replying. I am not sure what that means but will take your advice go no more than 800mhz. I have worked out that slot 1 means that my board is a slot 1 board and I need a processor that is a slot 1 also. My only other option I believe is a slot 1 adapter to allow me to use a socket370 processor. Do you happen to know if using this adapter will put the motherboard at risk at all? also is it important to use a CPU with the same FSB as the motherboard? e.g. motherboard is 100FSB will a CPU with 133FSB shorten the boards life? (I have learnt a bit in the past few hours!) :)

I have had no experiance of Slot 1 adapters but I would think that they would not put your motherboard at any risk. However you could visit the website of your motherboard manufacturer to see if they mention anything, or try serching google/yahoo for any info.

I would also suggest that you get a processor with the same FSB rating as your board as putting in a processor with a FSB of 133mhz may require you to change voltage core settings among other things just to get the processor to work, It could also end up damaging your board, processor or both.

Hi Liz,
I also own two slot 1 motherboards, i would personally keep with the slot 1 processors rather than socket 370 using an adaptor. Ive been told that the adapters sometimes dont work.. just what ive heard! Then again, they're only £5 so it might be worth getting one and trying to borrow a socket 370 to try on it. Youll never know till you try! Hope this helps!

Thanks DB7, I have no idea how to change core settings and dont want to risk damaging the board so will stick with a FSB of 100.

Hi IBM, thanks for your reply ideally I would like to get a slot 1 but they are so hard to find new! Now that I have a better understanding of what I can use, I will keep looking and try the adapter as a last resort.

Thanks again for all you advice everyone :)

I too have a P6SBA,

About a year ago I bought an intel 1Ghz 100FSB Slot 1 CPU and it kept on 'buzzing' and crashing the pc after any heavy CPU useage, Supermicro's support were crap, and after trying another one (I thought perhaps the CPU was faulty), and messing about with jumpers/BIOS settings etc.. I eventually gave up and stuck with my P2 350 & just bought a better Graphics Card instead with the money (geforce 2 gts).

It's just about lasted me, but its time again for an upgrade soon, you can get a decent athalon xp mboard and amd processor for a good price now, so I'm gonna do that in a few months, its more expensive than just upgrading the cpu, but you have to change motherboard technology at some point !

Hope this is of interest,

Rob
