Comment: What are the tell tale signs of your cpu being toast? The cpu in question is an amd athlon xp2000+. I cant get past the start up screen where it gives you the choices of what o.s. to choose. computer just reboots itself everytime....wont let me go into safe mode or anything. I replaced the mobo and cpu.

Reply: (edit)If you swapped in a different mobo/cpu and the problem is persisting, I'd say it's a case of bad RAM.

Reply: (edit)Go into the BIOS before the OS prompt and verify that it is recognizing your CPU correctly. Depending on your motherboard you may need to move some jumpers or merely set it correctly in the BIOS. Check your motherboard manual for the appropriate information.
