If its 55c idle at 133mhz there is something wrong with the hsf or hsf installation. Try running with the case open for now. Also try running it at 133 but increasing the multiplier from 13 to 16, which will get you to the rated cpu speed of 2.17g. If that works the problem is the motherboard or memory not the cpu or hsf. The board could just be overstating the cpu temp. If its really 55C the heatsink will feel fairly hot.
Also check your autoshutdown temp in bios. Maybe its set to 60c and at 166 you're hitting it.
Also try running the memory at a slower speed for now. It could just be that the board doesn't like 166 between the memory and the memory controller. Wouldn't be the first time.
Also try running one stick of memory at a time.
Hopefully one of these items will lead to the culprit. Let us know!
Summary: this is a follow up from http://www.computing.net/cgi-bin/mycomputingread.pl?4 ok. me again. i have brought a new heatsink and fan (arctic cooling copper silent 2). it is still way to hot! and i used...
Summary: I just bought a P4 3.06 and an ASUS P4SDX. This thing idles at 54c. If I play counterstrike for 10 minutes, quit, and check temps, it's over 70c!! This seems WAY to hot. The cpu has the retail HSF...
